Regional Business Conference on Afghanistan

Regional Business Conference on Afghanistan, New Delhi November 18, 2006, was the title of the conference, held by Afghanistan Investment Support Agency, that Mr. Zalmai Atifi Managing Director of the company, on behalf of Herat Region businessmen, was invited to accompany HE Mr. Hamid Karzai, Hon'ble President of Afghanistan, along with nineteen other national businessmen. The Business Forum was inaugurated by the Honble President of Afghanistan HE Mr Hamid Karzai. VIPs and leading businesses from G-8 Countries (USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan, France, Italy, Russia), Countries adjoining Afghanistan (Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, China, Pakistan, Turkey, UAE, Finland) and from Multilateral Agencies like United Nations, UNDP, IMF, World Bank, ADB, European Commission, European Council, Aga Khan Development Network, SAARC Secretariat, ECO secretariat, were participating in the Business Forum. The purpose of the conference was to promote regional cooperation, highlight the importance of Private Sector Development in the progress of Afghanistan and also invite investment in various business projects on offer in Afghanistan.

Mr. Farooqi , AICCA, explained about registration process of companies and investment in Afghanistan, Mr. Haidar Raza, Dy minister of commerce and industry of Afghanistan, addressed Afghanistan as an investment destination, and Mr. Suleman Fatimie, vice president of AISA, continued by explaining the investment opportunities in Afghanistan. Financial sector reforms, project opportunities for regional cooperation, and privatization of state owned enterprises were the other issues pointed in this business forum. During the Forum, Mr. Zalmai Atifi had opportunity to give information regarding investment opportunities in Herat Industrial Area; consequently some of investors announced their readiness in providing plants and machinery for establishing factories.

Also Mr. Atifi, during the party which was arranged by the Minister of Foreign affairs of India, discussed with the high level authorities and European countries Ambassadors about the future of investment in Afghanistan.

Through participating to series of discussions with Ministers of Commerce, Finance, Energy and Water, and Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, Mr. Atifi explained about the obstacles and opportunities regarding Pharmaceutical business. Consequently they promised to cooperate more in this field.
